Francisco Cruzat or François Cruzat was a Spanish soldier who served as lieutenant governor of Illinois Country and Interim Governor of East Florida in 1789, temporarily replacing Arturo O´Neill due to ill health. ==Biography== Francisco Cruzat joined the Spanish Army in his youth. He had a highlight career as soldier, and he obtained the Lieutenant grade. After the promotion of Pedro Piernas, lieutenant governor of Illinois, to a new charge in New Orleans in 1775, control of Saint Louis (Missouri) was ceded to Francisco Cruzat, who continued the enforcement of the same Spanish policies that Piernas.〔 Pages 27, 34.〕 In 1778, however, Cruzat was removed as commander of St. Louis upon the orders of Spanish Governor Bernardo Galvez, who was responding to British complaints about that Cruzat had allowed Spanish agents to violate British territory in Illinois.〔 Galvez replaced Cruzat with Fernando de Leyba.〔 During his rule the first ferry was established in Maramec, by a man named John Baptiste Gamache.〔(Chapter II. So, he (since St. Louis) sent a force of about 140 Spanish soldiers and Native Americans (60 Native volunteers) under Captain Eugenio Pourré to capture Fort St. Joseph.〔 〕 The militia also included Ensign Charles Tayon and the interpreter Louis Chevalier.〔 The Fort St. Joseph was captured and plundered on February 12, 1781.〔(Indiana in the American Revolution )〕 Cruzat left his office of lieutenant governor of Illinois in 1787. Later, he was appointed Interim Governor of East Florida in 1789, temporarily replacing Arturo O´Neill, because of his disease.
